Ellen trained at the RAH as a nurse graduating with a Gold Medal in 1938 (Joan Durdin ‘Eleven Thousand Nurses’ 1999) and then obtained her Midwifery Certificte at the Royal Women's Hospital in Sydney. She was travelling to the UK in 1939, sailing via the USA, to continue her career in nursing wen war as declared.
Her younger brother Duncan, who had been awarded a 1938 Rhodes Scholarship after completing his education at St Peters College and the University of Adelaide (LLB), arrived in England at the same time in October 1939 to study at Balliol College Oxford. In April 1940 she joined the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Nursing Service Reserve and on 30th May 1941 was appointed as a Nursing Sister (London Gazette WWII Military Notices 9 November 1941) Ellen was sent to the Middle East where she nursed until March 1945. She returned home to South Australia in November 1945.
