Arthur Theodore Phyffers enlisted for service in Brisbane under the assumed name George Cotter. Arthur had arrived in Australia in around 1903 as a 21 year old. He had been orphaned at the age of nine, and his eldest sister Mrs. Alice Friend records on his Roll of Honour Circular (www.awm.gov.au) that he had no formal schooling.
Alice also stated that they were the grand-children of Theodore John Baptiste Phyffers (www.victorianweb.org) (1820 - 1876) a well known sculptor in his day.
