Son of George Henry Vitnell of Eugowra Public School, Orange, NSW and Sarah Elizabeth Vitnell of Melrose Calvert Street, Marrickville, NSW.

Brother of Ernest Edward  Vitnell who returned to Australia on 4 March 1919 having served with the 17th Battalion and William John Henry Vitnell who returned to Australia on 28 August 1917 having served with the 12th Light Horse Regiment

Commenced return to Australia on 3 August 1917 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 18 September 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
