Gilbert Henry BALINSWELLA was born 1879/1880 in Ararat, Victoria, a son of Peter BALINSWELLA and Isabella CARRINGTON
He enlisted on 2nd Jan 1916 with 28th Battalion S/N 4079, and his Unit embarked from Fremantle WA on 1st April, 1916 on HMAT Ulysses
Gilbert was killed in action on 9th April, 1918 -Dernancourt, France and buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Picardie, France
He married Annie M. KENNY in 1907 in WA - she died 12th May, 1907 - buried in Cue Cemetery in W.A.
He enlisted as a private and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 31.3.1917 & Corporal on 18.12.1917
The age on his cemetery records is listed as 42 but he was more like 38 when he died.
"KILLED AT THE FRONT. CORPORAL G. BALINSWELLA.
Yesterday morning the Rev. Father Conlon, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Ararat, conveyed, through a telegram from the Defence Department, the sad intelligence to Mrs Balinswella, of Stawell road, that her son, Corporal Gilbert Balinswella, had been killed in action on the 9th April, 1918. The deceased, who was thirty-five years of age, was well kuown through-out Ararat and district, having resided here with his parents for a considerable number of years. The decesed, who was twice married, leaves a wife, but no family, to mourn her loss. He enlisted in West Australia. Deep regret is expressed, for the relatives in their sad affliction. As a token of respect to the memory of deceased, the flag at the Town Hall was at half mast yesterday afternoon." - from the Ararat Advertiser 25 Apr 1918 (nla.gov.au)
