Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

92 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 27th August 1929, Private William Raymond O’Keefe, 1st Battalion (Reg No-3641), labourer from Bulladelah, New South Wales and Pennant Hills, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 37. CATHOLIC 1-N Spec. 5.

Born at Raymond Terrace, New South Wales about 1892 to Daniel O and Matilda M O'Keefe of Wilton Street, Merewether (The Junction), N.S.W.; husband of Amy G O'Keefe nee Jack (married 1924, Hamilton, N.S.W., died?), William enlisted November 1916 with the 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 23.8.1918 (GSW right thigh), William returned home June 1919, being discharged on the 10th August 1919.

Mr. O’Keefe’s name has been inscribed on the Bulahdelah War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 25th April 1997, 150 names inscribed).

William’s headstone inscription gives us no indication of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Could descendants please contact me with photos and more information.

Younger brother Cyril Daniel (1st Australian Tunnelling Company, Reg No-5594, born 1896, died 19.11.1963, Newcastle, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.

Lest We Forget.
