Clifford Daniel Parsons Beasley was born in Alberton, Port Adelaide on the 25th July 1897. He was the son of Edmund Beasley and Jane Susanna Parsons of Sussex Street, Alberton, South Australia. Clifford had seven older siblings and two younger siblings. He was a methodist. He was a single, 18 and a half year old labourer before enlisting. Clifford stood at 5 feet 7 and a half (171.5cm) and weighed 135 ibs. He had grey eyes and had a “fresh” complexion.
Clifford enlisted on the 25 January 1916 in Adelaide. His service number was 2762. He embarked from Australia 25th March 1916. After some training in Egypt he embarked from Alexandria on June 20th 1916 heading towards France. On the 29th of September he joined his unit as a Private, C Company, 2nd Depot Battalion, 32nd Infantry Battalion, 5th Reinforcements and was taken on strength 2 August 1916
He was diagnosed with trench feet, a painful condition caused by sitting in unsanitary conditions in trenches in December 1916. He was treated at Camiers and Calais in France and then sent to hospital in Brighton England arriving 22nd December 1916. He was discharged for Furlough in January and got into trouble for being AWL when he did not report back to Perham Downs on time at the end of his leave. He was arrested and sent back with two days punishment. In April 1917 he was transferred to the 7th company Warham to the 39th company. In September 1917 he was transferred to the 52nd battalion. He again got sick in September 1917 (unspecified) and was sent to Forest Mill Rest. In October he was sent back to France.
On April 6th 1918 Clifford was badly wounded in action with a gun shot wound to his buttock during the Spring Offensive when Germans attacked. He was immediately evacuated to a hospital in England. He was granted leave after being discharged from hospital in January 1918. Once again he did not report back from leave on time and was reported as AWL. He spent the remainder of the war serving at base in England.
Clifford returned to Australia 3rd January 1919, arrving back 13th February 1919. On the 13th of March 1919 he was discharged due to Cessation of hostilities (meaning the war ended). In total he served 3 years and 66 days, 2 years and 326 days being served abroad.
