Mother replied to Base Records, 7 September 1921:
' ... he was in the Big Battle on Somme on the 19 of July 1916 wounded and they were not to take any of the men in from the field for 48 hours as the Germans Batted [bayonetted?] him and berried him alive, were he fell this is the story I got from the field from a mate of his the name was Fellows. I burnt the letter about a week before I got yours excuse me.'
