Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
64 years ago today, on the 2nd August 1958, Private Clement John Wilson, 14th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery (Reg No-1677), railway porter from 57 Smith Street, Marrickville, New South Wales, father of Lucy Dorothy, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 69. CATHOLIC 2-46. 81.
Born at Glebe, New South Wales on the 25th April 1889 to Clement and Annie Wilson; husband of Olivia (Olive) Katherine Wilson nee Tulloh (married 1910, Woollahra, N.S.W., died?) of 42 Cecilly Street, Leichhardt, New South Wales, Clement enlisted September 1916 with the Light Trench Mortar Battery, September-December 1916 Reinforcements at Sydney, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 29.1.1917 (not stated), 9.8.1917 (trench fever), 31.1.1918 (laryngitis).
Wounded in action - 22.3.1918 (SW throat & head).
Clement returned home July 1918, being discharged medically unfit (SW neck) on the 30th September 1918.
Mr. Wilson’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name possibly inscribed on the St. Peters Town Hall First World War Honour Roll. Name not inscribed on the Marrickville War Memorial or the NSW Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour 1914-1919.
I have placed poppies at Clem’s Commonwealth War Grave in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
