Biography contributed by Robert Kearney

James, known as Arthur, was the second of eleven children of Francis (Frank) Goodwill (born 1852 in Yorkshire, England) and Ellen Crole (born 1862 in Melbourne, Victoria). Frank, a Farmer, and Ellen married in 1882 at Longwarry in Victoria, and raised their family in the Gippsland Region. Arthur was one of three sons to serve in WWI - Albert (Service No:5023) and William (Service No:2119) also served.

Arthur was a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in February 1916 as a Private (Service No:5698) with 5 Infantry Battalion. He was WIA at Boulogne in France in October 1917 (Shell Wounds to his eye, arm and leg) and was Discharged in July 1919. Brother Albert was KIA in March 1917.

Returning to Gippsland, Arthur was a Farmer at Lardner in Warragul, and in 1929 married Julia Rebecca May Gregory (born 1886 at Lardner in Victoria). Arthur and Julia raised their family at Lardner, where Arthur was a Farmer until his death in 1957. Julia died in 1972. - Courtesy - Chris Buckley
