CARLTON GLADSTONE WALLACE STEWART LINDSAY was born on 20th December, 1894, at Navuloa, Fiji, the son of Mr. William Weir Lindsay and Mrs. Elizabeth Lindsay. He was educated at the Sydney Church of England Grammar School, North Sydney, and entered the service of the Bank on 26th August, 1913, at the Head Office.
Carlton Lindsay enlisted in the A.I.F. on 7th February, 1916, and trained at the Rutherford Camp. He was promoted to corporal on 1st May, 1916, on which date he sailed from Australia in the transport “Benalla.”
He served in France with the 9th Machine Gun Company from 21 st November, 1916, and on 29th December was promoted to sergeant. When machine gun battalions were formed in February, 1918, he continued service in the 3rd Machine Gun Battalion until 4th April, 1919. He was promoted to company quartermaster-sergeant in May, 1917; to second-lieutenant on 3rd November, 1917; and won his lieutenancy in March, 1918.
Carlton Lindsay took part in the Battles of Messines, Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux, and various minor operations, and he was in the big advance against the Germans from 8th August, 1918, up to the signing of the Armistice.
