Prior to the war he was General Staff Officer at Victoria Barracks, Sydney, New South Wales.
Having been brought out here in July 1913. He originally belonged to the Royal Engineers, England,
and saw some fighting on the north western frontier of India.
He was a very capable officer, and popular with all ranks
Francis was a Brigade-Major of the first Infantry Brigade (AIF).
Major Francis Duncan IRVINE, a 39 year old Soldier from c/o Bank of Australasia, Martin Place,
Sydney, New South Wales.
Described on enlisting as 39 years 9 months old; married; 5' 7" tall; 10 stone 6 lbs;
He enlisted on 15 August 1914 and was allotted to the 1st Brigade Headquarters as Captain.
On 5 October 1914 he was promoted to Major.
He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A14 Euripides on 20 October 1914,
as a Brigade Major with the 1 Infantry Brigade Headquarters.
During the Gallipoli Campaign he was Killed in Action 27 April 1915.
Buried in: NO KNOWN GRAVE
His name is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
His name is located at panel 2 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial,
Canberra, ACT.
Married to Emily Marian Irvine, with two children, returned to England,
where Major Irvine's father, a retired Indian colonel resided.
