Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
William John Barrett was the eldest of four brothers to enlist for service in the First World War, two of whom 4431 Private James Benjamin Barrett, 60th Battalion and 1318 Private Alfred Ernest Barrett, 2nd Battalion were killed in France, on 19 July and 25 July 1916. All three brothers have no known graves.
Another brother, 3706 Frederick Albert Barrett 5th Battalion AIF, was sent home for 'family reasons' after his mother appealed by letter to Senator Pearce. He was only 16 years of age when he enlisted.
