He was 29 and the son of Patrick and Alicia Byrne, of Bally Valley, Killaloe, Co. Clare, Ireland.

Died on this date - 5th January........Corporal John Francis Byrne was born at Bally Valley, Killaloe, Co. Clare, Ireland around 1889. He came to Australia & enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th September, 1914 as a 25 year old Labourer from Box Hill, Victoria.
Private Byrner left Alexandria, Egypt on 5th April, 1915 for Gallipoli with 6th Battalion. He was wounded on 25/26th July,1915 with shrapnel wounds to his left side and invalided to Malta then England & was admitted to Military Hospital, Lewisham, London, England on 26th August, 1915. He was discharged to furlo on 8th September, 1915.
Private Byrner arrived back at Alexandria on 13th January, 1916. He was transferred to 58th Battalion on 17th February, 1916.
Private Byrner arrived in France on 23rd June, 1916. He was sent to England on Furlough for 2 weeks in January, 1917 & rejoined 58th Battalion on 9th February, 1917.
Private Byrne was promoted to Temporary Corporal on 20th June, 1917 & then promoted to Corporal on 1st August, 1917.
Corporal Byrne was sent sick to hospital on 16th October, 1917 & eventually transferred to England on 21st October, 1917 with pleurisy.
Corporal Byrne was admitted to General Military Hospital, Colchester, Essex, England on 22nd October, 1917 with Pleurisy. He died at 7.45 am on 5th January, 1918 from Pleurisy & Effusion.
Corporal John Francis Byrne was buried at 2 pm on 9th January, 1918 in Colchester Cemetery, Colchester, Essex, England where 10 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
