Claude was the youngest of nine children of Archibald Aitken (born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1844) and Emma Elizabeth Irish (born in London, England in 1844). Archibald was a Brewer, and was Mayor of Collingwood in 1886.
Claude was a Bank Clerk in Armadale, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916. He had been in the School Cadets. Claude served as a Gunner (Service No: 3347) with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade 11th Reinforcements and 14th Field Artillery Brigade, and as Company Quartermaster Sergeant with the AGBD. He was Discharged in 1919.
Claude returned to Melbourne, Victoria where he worked as a Bank Clerk. In 1927 he married Beatrice Isabel Renfree in Melbourne, Victoria and continued work as a Bank Clerk until his death in Oakleigh, Murrambeena, Victoria in 1935
