William left Adelaide on board HMAT Warilda on 10 February 1916 and served
in Egypt throughout 1916. He was hospitalised for a month in May at Romani,
Egypt with muscular rheumatism. This led to further hospitalisation at the 31st
General Hospital at Port Said and the 3rd Australian General Hospital at
Abbassia, Cairo. William recovered and rejoined his unit on 6 October. He was
wounded in action, sustaining a gunshot wound to the right leg on 19 April
1917. This resulted in William being sent to the 14th Australian General
Hospital in Abbassia prior to his return to Australia on board H.T. Otari on 15
May 1919. William was discharged on 19 August 1919.
