War Service/Promotions: On arrival in Egypt, he was Taken on Strength 1st Light Horse Regiment, Heliopolis, 1 March 1916. Transferred to Artillery Details, Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, on 15 May 1916, where he was a Gunner with 120th Howitzer Battery. He embarked on HMT Corsican, from Alexandria, Egypt, on 28 May 1916, disembarked at Plymouth, Devon, England, 12 June 1916. Next he proceeded overseas to France from Southampton, England, 26 March 1917, where he was Taken on Strength on 29 March 1917, 12th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 112th Battery. Detached to 16 O.M.W., France on 11 May 1918, rejoining unit on 16 May 1918. On 4 July 1918, France, he was appointed Acting Bombardier. Detached to 2nd Army Rest Camp, France, on 31 July 1918, rejoining 112th Battery on 18 August 1918. On 27 August 1918 Douglas went to 4th Army Artillery School, and on 5 September 1918 he was promoted to Bombardier. He was on leave from Belgium in England from 26 September 1917 to 13 October 1917, and again to England on 23 November 1918, returning to his unit in France on 15 December 1918. After final leave to Paris from 20 January to 31 January 1919, he was marched out for return to Australia on 30 March 1919, arriving at Southampton on 2 April 1919, and proceeding to No. 3 Group, Codford, Wiltshire, England.
Fate: Returned to Australia per HT Borda, on 11 May 1919, embarking at Devonport, England, and disembarking in Australia on 28 June 1919. He was discharged from 12th F.A.B. on 22 August 1919. He married (1) Lena Mary Frances Winifred Gallop, 3 January 1920, St James' Church of England, Sydney, NSW. They divorced. He married (2) Marjorie Maude Waldron Jenkins/Lister, 9 August 1930, St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney, NSW.
