From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 10178 & 2746 Group Captain William Alexander Robertson of Albert Park, Victoria who prior to his enlisting for War Service on the 16th of February 1916 had been an engineering student.
William was allocated to the 10th Field Company Engineers 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training on the 20th of June. William arrived in England on the 10th of August, and by the 8th of November he had volunteered to join the Australian Flying Corps.
Having been accepted, William undertook basic training in England and following his graduation as a pilot, he was Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, and officially taken on strength with the 69th Squadron Australian Flying Corps on the 7th of June 1917.
Detached for service with the Royal Flying Corps, William arrived in France in August, and having been promoted to Lieutenant, he was posted to the 32nd Squadron.
Shortly after his arrival, William was posted to the 2nd Squadron Australian Flying Corps. and served with this Squadron until the start of 1918, with his being hospitalized for debility, and which would see him being returned to England in February 1918.
Following his recovery, William spent time in England with the 5th Training Squadron, and later the 8th Training Squadron. William was promoted to Captain in August 1918, and was retained in England where he continued to serve with Training Squadrons, Captain Robertson, was still engaged in this work with Training Squadrons in England when the War concluded.
On the 17th of March 1919, William began his repatriation back to Australia. Having arrived back in Melbourne, William’s appointment as a Captain with the Australian Flying Corps was terminated on the 14th of June 1919.
With the start of a second World War, William again, was in the service of the Royal Australian Air Force, being posted to RAAF Headquarters in Australia. Serving as a Group Captain, William’s service would be continuous from the start of the War until his premature death, caused by illness occurred on the 12th of October 1943. William was aged 47.
Following his passing, Group Captain William Robertson, a veteran of two World Wars, was formally interred within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria
