HEWBY BROTHERS - WEST AUSTRALIA
Arthur Sydney 'Snow' HEWBY was younger brother to William John HEWBY, KIA WW1 30 May 1916 Fleubaix, France, aged 20 years old.
Snow and Bill attended Scotch College, Perth where they each excelled in sport. In particular Australian Rules Football, Cricket and Bill participated in Rowing.
Their mother Louisa Hewby died in February 1910. Snow and Bill had a younger brother Lionel George Hewby born 1904. Lionel tragically died in 1911 aged 7 years. He had gone to stay with friends in Wagin where he contracted diptheria attending the local school.
Arthur Sydney 'Snow' Hewby played football for Perth Football Club and played in several Western Australian teams, in particular the 1921 the winning team against Victoria.
In August 1940 Snow Hewby enlisted AIF and joined 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion 8th Division - taken POWs of Japan at Singapore 15 February 1942. Snow spent the next 3 1/2 years as a POW in Singapore and the Burma-Thai Railway. He was recovered from Ubon POW Camp, Thailand at the end of the war,
