Joseph Currie was one of hundreds of men of the 60th Battalion who were reported as missing after the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916. He was married to Alice Margaret and was the father of a boy and girl, both under 6 years of age. His death was not confirmed until August 1917 but during January 1917 his wife was awarded 40 shillings per fortnight, the daughter 20 shillings and the son 15 shillings.
Joseph’s older brother, 2001 Private John Currie 23rd Battalion AIF, was killed in action Belgium 9 October 1917, age 37.
They were the sons of Catherine and the late James Currie, and Mrs. Currie placed the following notice in the newspaper
‘Oh, sacred heart of Jesus, have mercy on their souls, I am deprived, oh, God, of two who were to me most dear. The supreme sacrifice —Inserted by their brokenhearted mother and family, 152 Cromwell Street, Collingwood.’
