Francis Bonner 1885 - 1944
Researched and written by Ronald Henry Charles Bonner Dec 2001.
Francis Bonner was (the last) born at Horsnells Gully 1885.
Francis listed in the first A.I.F. in Broken Hill in 1915 and was sent to the Middle East, Egypt and Turkey. In 1916 he was sent to the Western Front where he was gassed. He then spent some time in France recuperating. There he met a French lass, Mademoiselle Marie Marland. A letter to Francis, dated 24th November 1919 gave her address as Chez Les Parents Q'Hesdinenl lez Boulogne sur mer Pas de Calais, and accepting his proposal of marriage. Francis took his discharge from the Army in London and gained an apprenticeship to a tailor on Savile Rowe, London. At the finish of this apprenticeship he returned to Australia, intending to return to France for Marie. However plans changed and he married Claire Arndt in Australia. They had no children.
Francis and Claire built shops on South Road, Black Forest, South Australia where he conducted his tailoring business, living in premises at the back of one of the shops and helped by Claire who was a very pleasant and kindly person.
After Francis' death in 1944 she sold the shops and lived with her sister Holly at Main Road, Glenunga, South Australia until her death aged 91.
