"GOULBURN AND THE WAR.
A cablegram was received on Wednesday by Mrs. George Gray, of Goethe, Charlecot-street, Dulwich Hill, late of Goulburn, that her second youngest son, Sergeant-major (Bugler) A. Gray, D.C.M., was killed in action in France on November 10. Deceased was 34 years of age, and prior to enlisting was employed in the machine department of the Sydney Morning Herald. He was a member of the military forces of this State. He served in the Boer war under Brigadier General Holmes, who was then a captain. On the outbreak of the present war Bugler Staff-sergeant-major Gray was the first of the 86 employees of the Herald to enlist, and one of the first in the State. He went to Rabaul, and on his return proceeded to the Dardanelles, and subsequently to France. During October last the late bugler was awarded the D.C.M. for gallantry in carrying ammunition under heavy fire, during which he was blown up and buried by a shell explosion. Deceased was the chief bugler in the military district of this State. (Sgt.-major Gray was a son of the late Mr. George Gray, at one time part proprietor of the Goulburn Evening Penny Post, and subsequently proprietor of the Yass Tribune.) - from the Goulburn Evening Penny Post 09 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)

Son of George and Mary GRAY, Charlotte Street, Dulwich Hill, Sydney, NSW
Arthur (as he was known), was the second youngest son of Mrs. George Gray of Dulwich Hill, formerly of Goulburn. Born in 1884 and educated at the Goulburn and Gundagai Superior Public Schools he was employe in the machine department of the Sydney Morning Herald.
One of the first to enlist from this office, he went to Rabaul under the late Brigadier-General Holmes, with whom he had served as a bugler in the Boer War, and on the return of that officer proceeded with him to the Darndanelles, and subsequently to France in the capacity of Buger Staff-Sergeant- Major. In October 1916, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry in carrying ammunition under heavy fire. He was killed in action two months later.
