Son of Joseph Henry Neal and Flora Neak nee McRae of 'The Gums', Tara, QLD. Brother of Brotherof Joseph Henry Neal who returned to Australia on 5 April 1918 having served with the 25th Battalion

"Frederick McRae Neal, son of Mr. J. Neal, of "The Gums," via Tara, Queensland, was born on the 26th of January, 1893. He attended the Melbourne High School in 1908-9-10, and was noted as an excellent student. He entered on a further course of training at the Teacher's College in 1911, where he obtained the Gladman Prize and passed the first year of the course for Diploma of Education.
Subsequently, he took up the duties of assistant at School No. 2605, Carlton, and was afterwards a master at the higher elementary school, Kyabram.
His reputation is that of a thoroughly earnest and reliable student and a teacher of undoubted ability.
He enlisted on the 25th of September, 1914, and embarked with the 14th Battalion. After training in Egypt, he proceeded to Gallipoli with his unit, and took part in the Landing. He was killed on the 1st of May, 1915."
