Biography

Alexander Leslie Emanuel ABERLEY was born on 9th January, 1901 in Kaniva, Victoria

His parents were John Charles ABERLEY and Annie COLWILL

On 1st May, 1917 aged 16 years & 4 months he enlisted with the 17th Battalion stating he was two years older

On 16th June 1917 he left Sydney on HMAT Beltana as a member of the 17th Battalion.  On 2nd October 1918 his service records state that his real age had been found out and he was sent on a working party.

He left France at the end of 1918 on ship Berrima to England and then from England to Australia on 21st Jan.1919.   He was discharged on 17th March 1919 in Sydney

Alexander also served in WW2 - Service No. N445999 enlisting on 26th Dec. 1942 with the Volunteer Defence Corp. and discharged 31.10.1945 as a bombardier with the Sydney Coast Artillery

He married Hilda Jean BAKER on 18th Jan. 1919 in Bathurst NSW

Alexander (Les) died on 9th Feb. 1975 and is buried in Riverstone Cemetery with his wife Hilda
