The Daily Observer at Tamworth reported on 19 December 1917 that Rev. J. Scott, Presbyterian minister has been informed by Base Records, that Gunner D. J. .McKay, eldest, son of Mr. David McKay, of High-street, West Maitland and the late Mrs Susan McKay (nee Gibson) was killed in action in Belgium on November 15.
An old boy of Maitland High School, the deceased was 21 years of age, being born in January 1896 but had stated his age as two years older at enlistment. A fine type of young man, well in-formed, he had contemplated entering the Congregational ministry, for which he was studying when be realised his country's call. He sailed for the front on October 25, 1916. His brother, 18960 Private (William) Alfred McKay, has also enlisted, and left last month with reinforcements to the engineering corps.
