From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 3657 & V91750 Private Nathaniel Henry Fitzclarence of Bairnsdale & Yallourn, Victoria, and who prior to his enlistment for War Service on the 14th of November 1916 had been employed as a labourer.
Nathaniel was allocated to reinforcements for the 2nd Pioneers 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training on the 11th of May 1917.
Following his safe arrival in England, where he was disembarked on the 19th of July, Nathaniel entered into camp for further training before being embarked for France where he arrived on the 9th of January 1918.
Aside being hospitalized for sickness, and a short period of convalescence during August and September, Nathaniel’s service in the trenches would be continuous, and he was with his Unit in the field when the Armistice was signed on the 11th of November 1918, which brought about an end to the First World War.
Nathaniel was returned to England on the 30th of May 1919, and from there would begin his repatriation to Australia, on the 24th of July. After his return to Australia, Nathaniel received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 4th of November 1919.
Following the outbreak of a Second World War, Nathaniel again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he re-enlisted in the Army on the 10th of January 1941.
Nathaniel was accepted for full time duty and was posted to the 9th Garrison Battalion. Nathaniel’s service again would be continuous until he was evacuated sick on the 11th of November 1942.
Nathaniel was admitted into the Repatriation General Hospital (Caulfield), and whilst still be hospitalized, he succumbed to illness due to cardiac failure on the 27th of November 1942. Nathaniel was aged 49 at the time of his premature death whilst again serving his country.
Following his passing, Private Nathaniel Fitzclarence, a veteran of the ‘Great War’, and who had chosen to serve Australia during a Second World War, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.

He married Dulcie Dorel Anita SARGEANT in Victoria in the Wesley Church on 3rd November, 1928
