Arthur John Leslie Whitelaw was born in Pt Pirie South Australia in 1894.
He enlisted 19th August 1914 and his father John Whitelaw was his nominated next-of-kin. Before joining the war, Arthur was single with no children, and worked as a railway cleaner. He was 5,6ft and weighed 148lbs. Arthur had also served for the 76th Infantry Army for two years.
Arthur was enlisted in the 10th battalion. He arrived at a camp on the 4th of December 1914 called Mena near Cairo and completed further training. The 10th battalion were one of first Australian battalions to land in Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. After the landing Arthur was missing until 2nd May.
Arthur was hospitalised with illness several times. His records show that he was often in trouble with his superiors, going AWL or refusing to follow orders. He was wounded in 1918 with gun shot wound to his right shoulder and hand which resulted in the loss of his right thumb. He was returned to Australia in October 1918
After he returned from the war Arthur married Muriel and they then had a son named Max. In 1942, he passed away at the age of 48 to an unknown cause, and lays at the Hindmarsh Cemetery South Australia.
