Charles Frederick Le Poer Trench, was an Australian who had enlisted into the 8th Field Ambulance AIF during 1915 and transferred to the RFC in March 1917. He was a SPAD pilot in WWI; he died in Sydney in 1974. He was injured during 1918 when his aircraft [B3539 SPAD] of 23 Squadron RFC, stalled avoiding telegraph poles and crashed from 100ft after engine failure on takeoff for offensive patrol. He was appointed an Acting Captain in the RFC October 1918, a Flight Lieutenant in 1924, Squadron Leader in 1933 and Wing Commander in 1937, T-Group Captain in 1941 (retired 1946; retaining rank of Group Captain). In 1935 he was Commanding Officer, 11 (Bomber) Squadron RAF (Risalpur, India).
His only son was killed on active service with the RAF at 22 years of age. "A promising R.A.F. career was cut tragically short on April 16th 1950 when Pilot Officer Michael Barnard Le Poer Trench died at sea shortly after rescue. Following a collision, he had baled out of a Vampire jet fighter of 247 Squadron. Pilot Officer Le Poer Trench graduated from Cranwell last year as an outstanding member of No. 46 Entry, and winner of the Chance Memorial Prize.”
