John Harry Lambert Bell was the seventh and youngest child of Thomas Bell and Eleanor Elizabeth Bell (nee Lithgow). He was born at home, "Bleak House", Milcowie on 30 May 1892. His mother, known as Nell, named him after her father John Lithgow of Golden Grove and "Miss Lambert' whom over the years I can't exactly remember, but seem to recall helped with the younger children, whom she loved dearly. He was baptised at St Silas Church, Crystal Brook on 6 November 1892.
"Jack" attended Milcowie School which was built by his father in approximately 1877 with the help of neighbours. He completed his final two years of Primary School at Crystal Brook finishing in October 1907. With the advent of World War 1 Jack enlisted on 16 June 1915 and was allocated to the 11th Reinforcements of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment. He saw action in the desert campaigns in the Middle East and was twice promoted. At the end of October 1917 his Regiment was involved in the hostilities at Beersheba. He was wounded in action and transferred to hospital in Cairo. His wounds were such that he was invalided back to Australia in February of 1918. He was formally discharged on 6 May 1918. For his service he received the 1914-1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Jack married Jessie Ross Helling of Tintinara on 9th April 1921 at the Methodist Church, Unley. He continued farming at "Karinya" Tintinara with the help of brother and neighbour Doug on the "Allawah" property. Jack and Jessie had two children, Ross and Helen. Sadly his health began to deteriorate as a result of his war injuries and he passed away on 19 July 1933 and was laid to rest in the soldiers's section of the West Terrace cemetery. Jessie moved to Westbourne Park two years later where she built a new home which allowed the children to attend schools for their secondary education.
