STORY-OUTLINE William Thomas Collie (Service No.903) embarked on 8/4/1915 at Brisbane per HMAT "Star of England" A15 for Egypt. During August of 1915 he was "buried as a result of shell explosion, unconscious for two hours". Transported to England he underwent surgery for appendicitis at New Hampstead Hospital. and was recommended as permanently unfit for active service, fit for light duties and later invalided for return to Australia from Portland England on HMAT "Star of Victoria"" A16 on 19/1/1916.
He again embarked for Suez on 9/10/1916 from Melbourne on HMAT "Clan McEwen" A65 with the 11th Light Horse Regiment (Service No.20419) arriving 8/11/1916 and was transferred to the Anzac Provost Corps for police duty at Rafa, Alexandria and Abbasia in Egypt and transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Brigade in July 1917. On 26/11/1917 he was killed in action, probably in the Battle of Nebi Samwill as part of the defence of Jerusalem, and was buried near Hill 275, Palestine. He is buried at Remleh War Cemetery, Palestine, Row N, Grave No.2."
