Died on this date – 11th May.... Henry George Carr was born at Tumut, NSW in 1892. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 24th July, 1915 as a 23 year old, single, Telegraphist.
Driver Henry George Carr embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Beltana (A72) on 9th November, 1915 with the 1st Field Company Engineers, 11th Reinforcements. He was remustered as Sapper from 23rd February, 1916 in accordance with A.I.F. Orders 785 & 970.
Sapper Henry George Carr proceeded from Alexandria on Ivernia on 21st March, 1916 to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force). He disembarked at Marseilles, France on 28th March, 1916.
Sapper Henry George Carr was wounded in action in France on 23rd July, 1916. He was admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance on 25th July, 1916 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to foot then transferred to Hospital at Rouen. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Salta on 27th July, 1916 & admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, King’s Heath, Birmingham on 28th July, 1916 with bullet wound to right leg. Sapper Carr was transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital on 9th October, 1916 & discharged on 6th November, 1916.
Sapper Carr was posted to Command Depot at Weymouth on 6th November, 1916 then transferred to Command Depot at Wareham on 25th November, 1916. He was transferred to Engineers Details at Perham Downs, Wiltshire on 28th March, 1917.
Sapper Henry George Carr was detached for duty to A.F.C. (Australian Flying Corps) Details on probation from 28th May, 1917. He was marched out to Cadet School at Wendover on 7th August, 1917 & was appointed Cadet on 7th August, 1917 (A.I.F. List 216).
Cadet Henry George Carr was transferred to Australian Flying Corps from 24th August, 1917. He was attached to No. 49 Training Squadron from 18th September, 1917 then attached to No. 29 Training Squadron at Shawbury, England from 24th September, 1917.
Cadet Henry George Carr was admitted to 2nd Western General Hospital on 10th December, 1917 with Otitis Media. He was discharged on 19th December, 1917.
Having graduated & appointed Flying Officer (Pilot) Henry George Carr was to be 2nd Lieutenant in A.I.F. (Australian Imperial Force) from 27th April, 1918.
Second Lieutenant Henry George Carr died on 11th May, 1918 in the vicinity of Chattis Hill Aerodrome, Stockbridge, Hampshire, England as a result of an aeroplane accident – fracture of the Skull.
A Court of Enquiry was held on 12th May, 1918. (witness statements in full research on website) “The Court find that the accident was due to temporary loss of control of the Machine close to the ground. Whether this was due to a defect having developed in the machine while flying or temporary disability in the part of the pilot or simply misjudgement, the Court is unable to decide.”
Second Lieutenant Henry George Carr was buried in Stockbridge Cemetery, Stockbridge, Hampshire, England.
