Hector was the eldest of eight children of Charles Henry Edward John Ludowici (born 1864 at St Leonards in NSW) and Ada Jane Seymour Catt (born 1870 at Balmain in NSW). Charles (a partner in the family belt making business) married Ada in1894 at St Leonards in NSW. Charles established his own business in 1913 (Mangrovite Belting Co) and was Mayor of Lane Cove in 1909, and served as an Alderman for 25 years.

Hector was working in the family business as a Belt Maker when he enlisted in the Army in April 1917. He served as a Private (Service No:18956) with 1st Pioneers Battalion 12th Reinforcements and a Sapper with 12th Field Coy Engineers. In September 1919 he was granted leave to return to Australia at his own expense and was Discharged in 1919. Brothers Henry John (Private, Service No:N103825) and Reginald Edward (Lance Bombardier, Service No:N172582) served in the ACMF in WWII.

Returning to Sydney, NSW Hector was Managing Director of Mangrovite Belting Coy - leather belt manufacturers, tanners, curriers and importers, when he married Dorothy (Dorrie) Alfreda Baynes (born 1893 in Essex, England) in 1921 in Sydney, NSW. Following Dorrie's death in 1931, Hector remarried in 1937 - Annie Ellen Bryan (born 1880 at Broulee in NSW). Annie was a Nurse. Hector was living in Wellington, New Zealand in 1938, where he was Company Director. He died there 1948, and Annie died in Sydney, NSW in 1971.
