Hugh joined the 9th Light Horse and left Australia on 12 February 1915. He served in Egypt and Gallipoli throughout the war. Hugh was treated for enteric on board the hospital ship Dunluce Castle on 27 September and then sent to Bristol, England for further treatment in October. Hugh was able to return to duty in Egypt in February 1916. He went to Alexandria with the 9th Light Horse on 5 March 1916. Hugh was promoted to Corporal on 9 April 1917 and Sergeant on 31 October. He was shot in the upper arm in action on 8 November 1917, with his mother being notified on 5 December.
After the war’s termination Hugh continued serving in England prior to returning to Australia on 6 January 1920 where he was discharged on 7 March.
