Alan (or Dick as most people called him) was born at Tumby Bay on 16 November 1923. He 'fudged' his date & place of birth so he could enlist. He enlisted on 7 May 1942 at Birkinhead, S.A.

His service number was SX18463 and his Rank was Private and at discharge was with the 1 Australian Parachute Batallion.

He was a lively character and was able to turn his hand to anything - and do it most successfully!

His list of occupations shows how versatile he was - Fisherman, Sergeant of Police Force 1952 - 1958, Farmer, Cray Fisherman, Skipper Grade 2, Engine Driver Grade 2, Surf Life Saving and Rescue medals, St John's First Aid and SAFCOL Company Director.

He married Jean Gollan Ness and they had 3 children - Shirley, Richard and Brenda
