Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
William BEATTIE, (Service Number 1142) was born on 30 November 1890 at Campsie, Sydney. He began his career on the NSWGR&T as a junior car cleaner at Sydney in June 1907. Upon reaching 21 years of age his job description changed to car cleaner, and early the next year he became a conductor. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 28 March 1915
He embarked from Sydney on HMAT ‘Berrima’ on 25 June 1915, reaching Gallipoli in August. Evacuated through Mudros he spent a couple of months in Egypt before travelling through Marseilles to France where he was wounded on 5 August 1916 with shrapnel in his left knee and evacuated to the 23rd General Hospital, Etaples. He returned to his unit on 16 August and was again wounded on 20 August, this time with gunshot injures to his right toes. He was evacuated to England for treatment and furlough and did not return to the front lines until September 1917
He was killed in action on 9 October 1917.
He is buried in Passchendaele New British Cemetery, Passchendaele, Flanders, Belgium.
