William was the 2nd of four children of Patrick Barry (who arrived in Maryborough, QLD from County Clare, Ireland in 1875) and Cecilia Larkin (origniallly from Tasmania). Older brother James served in the AIF in Egypt and France
William was working as a Porter when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He was awarded the Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operation near Hamel Wood east of Corbie on July 4th 1918'.
Returning from WWI, William lived and worked in Rockhampton, QLD as a Warehouseman, and in 1924 married Eliza Ellen Sullivan in Mount Mrgan in QLD. He continued working as a Warehouseman in Fitroy, QLD until 1958 when he was 70 years of age. He retired to Ipswich, QLD and died in Ipswich, QLD in 1968
