Corporal Thomas Cavle Manning (Service No:6277) enlisted as a Private in the AIF on 25 July 1916 with 11th Depot Battalion - he had previously served in the Cadets and Militia. On 27 October 1916 Private Manning embarked from Brisbane for Plymouth with 9th Infantry Battalion on board HMAT A74 Marathon. Private Manning served in France with the 9th Battalion, and was promoted to Lance Corporal then Corporal in December 1917. Corporal Manning transferred to Australian Army Pay Corps and on 23 September 1919 embarked for the RTA on board HT Ascanius. Corporal Manning was Discharged on 26 December 1919.

Born in 1896 in Bundaberg QLD, Thomas was the fourth of nine children of George William Henry Manning (b1869 in Northamptonshire, England) and Ellen Elizabeth Richardson (b1872 in Lincolnshire, England). George immigrated in 1888, arriving in Bundaberg QLD on board the Scottish Lassie and Ellen arrivind in Brisbane QLD in 1889 on board the Jumna. George (a Gardener) and Ellen married in 1890 in Bundaberg, where they settled and raised their family and George worked as a Gardener, Storekeeper, Labourer and Fettler.

Thomas worked as a Clerk and was a Widower in 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF. Following his Discharge in 1919, Thomas returned to Bundaberg where he was working as a Clerk in 1929 when he married second wife Susan Violet Last (b1906 in Bundaberg, QLD). Thomas and Susan settled in Bundaberg where they raised their family and Thomas worked as a Clerk, Butter Vendor and CCC Worker. Thomas died in 1965 and Susan in 1973.
