108 Private Paul Allen 51st Battalion AIF died of wounds on the 3 April 1917, exactly six months after the death of his brother Leslie, at Mouquet Farm. Paul was only 19 years old when he died, having enlisted at 18 years of age in March 1916. He arrived in England only 10 days before his brother was killed in France. Paul was sent to France in October 1916. He served with the 51st Battalion and suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen during the attack on Norieul on the 2nd April 1917. He died the next day at the operating center of the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in the Pozieres British Cemetery (Plot II, Row D, Grave 38), Ovillers-La-Boisselle, France.
Mr. and Mrs Allen placed the following notice in the Hobart Mercury three weeks later, April 1917.
“ALLEN. -Died of wounds, April 3, 1917. Paul, dearly loved and fourth eldest son of Egbert and Lucy Allen, Taranna, aged 19 years. He nobly did his duty while thousands shirked.”
