Sydney was the third of ten children of William Ebenezer Crole (born 1857 in Richmond, Victoria) and Harriet Mary Parke (born 1869 in Blackeville in Victoria). William, a contractor and Harriet married in 1898 in Warragul in Victoria and raised their family in the region.
Sydney joined the Victoria Police Service on 21 November 1913 (Badge No: 5936) and was granted an extended leave of absence, rejoining on 10 May 1918 (Victoria Police Museum).
In 1915 Sydney enlisted in the AIF, serving as a Private, Driver and Gunner (Service No: 10332) with 2nd and 3rd Field Artillery Brigades. He was WIA in France in September 1917 - GSW to the right eye and back - and was Discharged in April 1918. Many of Sydney's relatives served in both WWI and WWII - including brothers Ernest George (Service No: 54867) and Floyd George Parke Crole (Service No: VX40718). Son John Sidney Crole served with the RAN as an Able Seaman (Service No: PM6240) from 1942 to 1946
In July 1918, Sydney married Isobel Christina Fuller (born 1893 in Port Campbell, Victoria). The couple settled in Moonee Ponds, where Sydney retired from Victoria Police on 1 August 1946, He died in 1955 and Isobel in 1979.
