A Returned Old Warrior who served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

77 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 2nd October 1944, Private Thomas John Carlyon, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2044), miner from 59 and 51 Lambton Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, father of four (Lyla, Harry B, Violet H, Beryl), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. ANGLICAN 3-168. 33.

Born at Camborne, United Kingdom about 1865 to Thomas and Mary Carlyon; husband of Rose Carylon nee Bell (married 1900, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1950), Thomas enlisted March 1916 (stated age 44, actual age 51!) at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 8.6.1917 (shell shock, Battle of Messines), Thomas returned home November 1917, being discharged (neurasthenia, overage) on the 15th December 1917. His welcome home by the Broadmeadow Citizens' Soldiers' Comforts Fund, presented with an inscribed silver-mounted tobacco pouch.

Mr. Carlyon’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll Of Honor (photo, unveiled date unknown, 619 names inscribed, proudly displayed at the Fort Scratchley Military Museum, Newcastle, N.S.W.). Name would probably be inscribed on the Hamilton Mechanics' Institute Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of this old Digger’s service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge 30/9/1944.
