Proceeded to Etaples, France per SS Princess Clementine, 3 February 1917. Taken on strength 15th Field Ambulance from Australian Medical Corps Reinforcements. In hospital (France) from 30 April 1917 until 11 May 1917 with Trench Fever. Transferred to 14th Field Ambulance on 26 May 1917. Wounded in action, suffering the effects of shell gas and conjunctivitis, 15 October 1917, France. Transferred to England, 83rd General Hospital, Boulogne, France, 29 October 1917. Admitted Southport Infirmary, Merseyside, England, 31 October 1917. In hospitals at Southport and Dartford until 27 April 1918. Moved to Fovant, Wiltshire, England, 21 June 1918. Rejoined unit (14th Field Ambulance) 19 October 1918. Left Le Havre, 13 May 1919. He was sick in Hurdcott Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, from 23 June to 28 June 1919.
Place of Wounding: Gassed, 15 October 1917, France.
Fate: Returned to Australia per HT Main, 23 July 1919. He married Muriel Annette Gordon,
30 September 1925, St Peter's Cathedral, Armidale, NSW.
Place of Death: 17 December 1959, at the District Hospital, Wollongong, NSW
Place of Burial: He was cremated at Wollongong Memorial Gardens, Wollongong, NSW, and has a memorial plaque there. There is also a memorial plaque to Roy and his wife, Muriel, at Emu Plains General Cemetery, Emu Plains, NSW.
