Son of Peter Van and Mary Ann Van nee Ryon of Osborne Street, Bendigo, Victoria. Brother of Peter Van who returned to Australia on 29 June 1919 having served with the 6th Battalion. Another brother Claude enlisted but was found to be under age and was discharged.
Commenced return to Australia on 1 May 1919 aboard HT China disembarking on 8 June 1919
