Awarded the Military Cross
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He displayed great dash and courage in rushing enemy posts, several of which were captured by his platoon. On other officers becoming casualties, he placed himself in command, displaying marked qualities of organization and leadership, which enabled his company to consolidate the position in a masterly fashion.'

Biography
Claude Cyril (known as Cyril) John McCann was one of three McCann brothers who enlisted in the Great War. The sons of John Francis and Eliza McCANN, Military Road, Largs, South Australia, although at the time of their enlistment Francis and Eliza were resident at Pelham Street Glanville.
Cyril was a cabinet maker on enlistment and he was living and working in the Port Adelaide area.
He was enlisted into the 27th Battalion on the 10th February 1915, with the rank of Corporal. He embarked with the Battalion on board the HMAT Geelong from Outer Harbour Port Adelaide on 31 May 1915.
The Battalion landed at Gallipoli on 12 September 1915.
