Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Alfred BARRETT, (Service Number 6380) was born on 1 November 1884. In 1913 he had a temporary role with the Traffic Branch as a gatekeeper in Sydney and by the end of the year he had progressed to become a porter but had been made a permanent employee and routine pay increments were made until 1917.
On 13 March 1916 he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces and enlisted at Enmore. He embarked from Australia on HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 9 September 1916, travelling directly to Plymouth, England.
Barrett proceeded overseas to France through Folkestone and was wounded in April 1917 with a shrapnel injury to his abdomen. He recuperated in England and returned to the front in August and was killed in action on 10 November 1917. With no known grave he is remembered at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
