Through the death of Mr. Leonard William Barkla, which occurred a week ago, Gawler lost a useful resident. The deceased was only 32 years of age, and prior to the war was a member of the Gawler South District Council. Mr Barkla served nearly 18 months at the front in France, and was wounded in the arm and leg. He returned to South Australia in July, 1917. At the time of his death Mr. Barkla was President of the Gawler branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, Soldiers' representative on the repatriation committee, Patron and delegate of the Gawler South Football Club, Past President of the Mutual Improvement Society, Chief Ranger of Cours Bushman's Pride, Forester's Order, J. D. of the Gawler Mark: Lodge, and J.W. of the Lodge of Fidelity of Freemasons. Mr. Barkla was interested in the search for gold in the Barossa Ranges, and was a member of the original syndicate of the Lady Emily Gold Mine. He has left a widow and two sons.
