Lieut Victor Joseph (Vic) Frewin
Lieut Victor Joseph (Vic) Frewin
b. 13 Jun 1889: Gosford, NSW
d. 15 Apr 1918: Hangard Wood, France
"Another Gosford lad has made the supreme sacrifice.
Lieut. Victor J. Frewin was killed in France on 15th April.
A cable conveying the sad news being received this week.
Lieut. Frewin was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Frewin, of Hill Street, Gosford, and was born at Gosford and educated at the local Public School.
"Vic." went to Sydney High School, and thence to Teachers' Training College.
His first appointment was to Islington, Newcastle, and then Gosford, Temora, and Burwood Superior Public School.
He enlisted from Burwood, NSW, on 13th May, 1915.
Reaching the battle front he was wounded on three different occasions.
First on 10th May, 1916, when he was recommended for a commission and gained it on being sent, after convalescence, to New College, Oxford.
Returning to France he was again wounded in February, 1917, and again towards the close of the year.
He took part in many battles, including Bullecourt, Zonnebecke, Passchendale, Polygon Wood, Anzac House, and Broodsceinde.
In the last offensive, where he was killed in action.
The late "Vic" Frewin was a fine young Australian, popular, respected by all who knew him, and in the death of their gallant son and brother, Mr. and Mrs Frewin and family have the sympathy of the whole community."
