Arrived in Australia at the age of 22 years. At the time of enlistment he was residing in Springsure, Central QLD.

Son of Joseph Clarke Unwin and Mary Jane Unwin of Bowes Road, Palmers Green, London, England.

From 19 June 1907 and 25 March 1908 he served as a volunteer in the Kings Royal Rifle, 2nd Middlesex Regiment and also two years with the Territorial Forces.

27 August 1914 - enlisted at Brisbane, QLD, with the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade with the rank of Gunner.
