Walter Helmsworth MacCROANAN was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 26th May, 1882 - parents names unknown
He first enlisted on 6th January, 1916 in Narrabri, NSW with the 9th Machine Gun Company (SN1486) & embarked on 4th May, 1916 on the HMAT Benalla
He was badly wounded with multiple gun shot wounds on 23rd January, 1917 - he left to return to Australia on 25th August, 1917 & arrived on 27th October, 1917 on the HMAT Benalla & was discharged as medically unfit on 28th November, 1917
Walter rejoined the Army on 17th July, 1918 in Sydney (SN67737) and embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Medic on 2nd November, 1918 with the 26 reinforcements (26 General Rifles) Composit Battalion
The ship was turned around when the Armistice was declared, but Walter died of broncho pneumonia & influenza on 23rd November, 1918 at the Sydney Quarantine Station and is buried in North Head Quarantine Cemetery - he was given a full Military Funeral.
