William David O'CALLAGHAN was born in Ballarat, Victoria on 16th July, 1875

His parents were Bartholomew O'CALLAGHAN & Sophia CURLEY who married in Ballarat on 12th April, 1868

He married Georgina Ness MITCHELL in Sydney on 28th November, 1907 - after her death in 1913 he married Alice May GUILLE in Sydney on 1st January, 1916

He first enlisted to serve during WW1 on 12th October, 1915 in Holdsworthy, NSW as a Private & embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Runic on 20th January, 1916 with the 19th Infantry Battalion - 9th reinforcements - he returned to Australia, leaving Plymouth UK on 8th April, 1917 & arrived on 10th June 1917 on the ship HMAT Barambah and was discharged as medically unfit on 10th July, 1917 due to age & debility & suffering from bronchitis

He served again from 24th June 1918 with the 3rd District Guard (Home Guard) & was discharged at his own request on 16th December, 1918 (No. 27080) No. 11 A.G.H.

It appears he had further home service and was discharged again on 21st July, 1920

William died on 23rd December, 1951 in St Kilda, Victoria and is buried in the Springvale Botanical Cemetery
