John was the fifth of nine children of George Thomas Hinkley (born 1844 in Leicestershire, England) and Anna Maria Sims (born 1854 in Gawler, South Australia). Edward - a Labourer - and Anna married in Ganoo Ganoo in Victoria in 1874, and raised their family in the Flinders Region in Victoria.
John was a Salvation Army Officer in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in December 1915. He served as a Private (Service No:5108) with the 25th Infantry Battalion and was WiA on two occasions in France - GSW to his shoulder in 1916 and GSW to his lower jaw in 1917. Brother Thomas served with the New Zealand Expeditionay Force (Service No:24/465) and was KiA in France in 1916. Brothers-in-Law Frederick Walter Johnson (Service No:1675), Alfred Ernest Johnson (Service No:5923), Oscar Joseph Gridley (Service No:370), and Charles Albert Fry (Service No:5336) served in WWI.
In June 1919, following his Discharge in January 1919, John married Henrietta Caroline Johnson (born 1888 in Ipswich, QLD). They settled in Brisbane, where John worked as a Labourer and Carter. They moved to Redcliffe when John retired in 1950 - John died in 1957 and Caroline in 1971.
