Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Thomas Patrick BUTLER, (Service Number 5334) was born on 21 March 1894 at Marrickville. He commenced working with the NSW Railways two days after his 18th birthday in 1910, as a junior porter in the Metropolitan District. He retained that role until his 21st birthday, when he became a porter. On 14 June 1916 he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces. On his enlistment papers, signed 10 January 1916, he gave his previous military experience as four years with the Irish Rifles, and one year at ‘German Concentration Camp, Liverpool’. This was a place of internment for persons of German nationality or descent, within the military areas near that town.
He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT ‘Ceramic’, on 14 April 1916 and reached Port Said in May, and after further training with the 1st and 14th Training Battalion was allotted to join the 55th Battalion. He travelled through Alexandria and Marseilles to France. He was hospitalised in November and oscillated between there and a convalescent depot until he joined his unit on 28 December.
On 28 February he was promoted to Corporal and a week later wounded in action with shrapnel to his left breast, left arm and left leg. He succumbed to those wounds on 10 March 1917 and is buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension 2½ miles SSW of Albert.
